The basis of an artist's work - the reasons behind their choices of subject matter, composition and technique - is often the result of their personal foundation. The experiences and preferences of a painter are expressed in how and why they paint. The moods expressed in the paintings by Marieluise Hutchinson are influenced by her past. Coming from "hearty stock", her formative years were enjoyed in a bucolic 1820's homestead on the South Shore of Boston. As a result, Marieluise chooses themes of the countryside, sea shore and tranquil days.

Scent From the Sea

Living and working in Yarmouth Port, Cape Cod, her subjects often include ocean scenes and architecture indigenous to the Cape. In fact, architecture has a particular significance to Marieluise's work, and creates a signature style that encompasses homes and homesteads from throughout New England.

Marieluise is self-taught. Always drawn to creative pursuits, she did not, however begin to paint until her late twenties. Her style is the result of careful study and trial and error. A passionate and committed artist, she works hard to ensure that each work match her vision in both mood and circumstance.

Light plays an important part in all her works, and she finds particular joy in the hours just before sunset.

Growing up during the early 1950's - a time when our nation was strong and at peace - patriotism played a significant role in the evolution of her aesthetic expression. This accounts for the frequent appearance of the American flag in many of her paintings.

Generally, no figures appear in her paintings, although a human presence is implied by a light in a window or a quilt on a clothesline or a snowman out front of a farmhouse. This is often subtext in Marieluise's work: nothing is superfluous. The vision is precise and, without showing the action, she shows us the result. She paints what is remembered. All else is suggested. Our imaginations are left to fill in the blank.

Her paintings stir memories, and embody Yankee values of character, integrity and promise. Marieluise herself embodies those values, generously supporting a number of charitable causes such as Child and Family Service of Cape Cod through an annual greeting card composition. The sale of these popular cards is much anticipated by many and has raised thousands of dollars for various causes.
